Q: Why to Meditate? How to Meditate? A: Meditation is just a fancy word for cultivating more moments of presence—moment when we are are not lost in thought, thinking about nonsense, or worse, ruminating on the past or anxiously worrying about the future. It’s what we all want, right? More moments of presence equates to more micro-moments to focus on building love in your relationships and serving the world through work you find worthy. It doesn’t matter how you meditate, the important thing is that you do it every day. Some like the Dalai Lama spend 4 hours each morning while others only spend a single breath when they wake up to relax and prime themselves for the day. Both are great—do what works for you. Think of it as training your focus the same way you exercise to train your muscles to put yourself in a position to succeed on and off the field and create a general sense of well-being. Some tips to get started that are easy to remember are the 5 “D”s of meditation: 1) Do it daily 2) sit with dignity (tall like you are sitting in a throne!) 3) Define an anchor to come back to, this could be your breath, a mantra, a prayer, etc,) 4) do it with strong determination (ignore the itch on your nose or the hum of a fly) 5) do it again (it gets easier and you feel the benefits more and more). Meditation is like taking a little bit of Prozac and a little bit of Prozac. More happiness and more control over your attention for the price of as little as one mindful breath a day. Time to get started!! #meditation #meditation101 #presence #mantra #prayer
